Sree Dhanwanthari, the Deity of Ayurveda is the incarnation of Sree Mahavishnu. The temples dedicated to Sree Dhanwanthari are very rare and our temple situates just 3 kms from Thrissur, the cultural capital of Kerala, in the village called Peringavu, Thrissur District, Kerala State.
Seeking the benediction of the Sree Dhanwnathari, hundreds of devotees visit the temple. They pray for their Ayur Arogya Saukhyam, means good health and long life. People with ailments to get their ailments cured, Doctors for getting the Lord’s blessings for their professional success and growth, flock to the temple with great trust. Many devotees come for Bhajan Sitting (worshipping in the temple by being present for all the pujas for a fixed number of days) and go back with much solace. It is believed and trusted that any Prasadam received from the temple has immense medicinal value.
The temple is more than 900 yrs old and it was under the control the Maharajas of Cochin. Later the temple and adjoining areas were bestowed to the famous Ashtavaidyan Thaikkattu Mooss, the then Kottaram Vaidyan of Maharajas of Cochin for their commendable ayurvedic achievements. Later Pazhanelli Achhan Mooss of the famous Thaikkattu Mana did the renovation and Puna-Prathista of Sree Dhanwanthari Moorthy. It is due the benediction of Sree Dhanwanthari Moorthy, Ashtavaidyans of Taikattu Mooss got their talent in Ayurveda treatment. Later Kochunni Tampuran of Cochin Dynasty came to worship in the temple and achieved great talent in Visha-Chikilsa due to the blessings of Sree Dhanwanthari. He constructed Chuttambalam and compound wall of the temple. He even used the Bhasmam of the temple as medicine for Visha-Chikilsa or poison treatment
In 1968, Sree Ashtavaidyan Thaikkattu Narayanan Mooss handed over the ownership of the temple to the Peringavu Devaswom Committee elected from the Hindu Community of Peringavu Village or Thattakam. On 21st August 1974, Mooss handed over all the documents of ownership to the Peringavu Devaswom. From that day onwards the chief patron of the temple was one of the members of this Illam. Now, Ashtavaidyan Thycattu Dr. P T N Vasudevan Mooss, the MD of SNA Oushadhasala, is the chief patron of the temple. This process of administration continued till date. Devotees worship Sree Dhanwanthari with a lot of devotion to cure their ailments. According to Indian concept, Sree Dhanwanthari is the Lord of Ayurveda, a system of traditional medicine native to India. Good health is prime for long life of all the species on the earth. Health means the status of no ailments and to maintain the status of no ailments, blessings of God almighty is imperative. Veda being the way to know the God and Ayurveda as an Upaveda, is the base for Indian Style of Medicine.
According to Puranas, due to the curse of Sree Durvasa Rishi, the Devas in the heaven lost their youthfulness and became aged with ailments and those ailing Devas approached Sree Mahavishnu in desperation for deliverance. He advised for churning Palazhi to get Amruthu and consume it to cure their ailments.
When the Devas churned Palazhi (ocean of milk) with the help of Asuras, there came first, the worst poison called Halahalam and Sree Paramasivan consumed it to save the three worlds from ruin. Then came Sree Mahavishnu incarnated as merciful Sree Dhanwanthari from Palazhi with Amritha Kumbam in his hands and Sree Dhanwanthari became the God of medicine. All the Ayurveda physicians see Sree Dhanwanthari as their Guru and worship with devotion. Thrissur Thaikkatu Mooss worshiped Sree Dhanwanthari in Peringavu as their Prime Deity of Worship. Kerala has 8 prominent Ashtavaidyans and the most prominent of them are Thaikkatu Mooss and Kuttancheri Mooss. All of them worshiped Sree Dhanwanthari as their Physician God who is also another incarnation of Sree Mahavishnu.
We, the humans, worship Sree Dhanwanthari to get his blessings to get release and relief from all the ailments and enjoy Ayurarogya Saukhyam throughout our life. No doubt, those who worship with devotion will get it.
